The MANN — three hours, the rooms that matter
Italy's greatest archaeological museum has 12,000 objects. A short list of the ones to actually see.

The shortlist
Mosaic room: the Alexander Mosaic from the House of the Faun in Pompeii — 1.5m × 5.8m of tessellated cinema. Spend 20 minutes here.
Farnese room: the Farnese Hercules, the Farnese Bull. Maximalist Hellenistic sculpture at the scale of cathedrals.
Secret Cabinet (Gabinetto Segreto): the Roman erotic art recovered from Pompeii, sealed by the Bourbons for two centuries. Adults only; an instructive 15 minutes.
Villa dei Papiri room: the bronze statues from the Herculaneum villa, the only intact Roman library — papyrus scrolls still being decoded.
