San Gregorio Armeno — the year-round Christmas street

Naples' presepio street is open in May, in August, in November — and the figurines are stranger out of season.

What to actually buy

The classic shepherd figurines (pastori) start at €15 and go up to €600 for hand-painted, hand-dressed pieces by Marco Ferrigno or the Capuano workshop. A small terracotta Maradona is €25 and ages well on a shelf at home.

Avoid the plastic-mould 'figurines' sold by the shops nearest Via dei Tribunali — they're mass-produced in Asia. The real workshops have a back room with someone actually sculpting.
