When to visit Campania — by season

The honest pros and cons of each month, from a team that watches them all.

When to visit Campania — by season

Spring — April to early June

Best for: city visits, hiking, photography, easy ferry availability. Warm enough to swim from late May. Lemons in full bloom in April.

Watch out for: variable weather in early April, Easter week prices, May 1st closures.

Summer + autumn

Summer (mid-June to August): peak season — crowds, traffic, full ferries, the warmest sea. Coast restaurants need reservations weeks ahead. August is the busiest two weeks of the Italian calendar; avoid if possible.

Autumn (September to October): the secret best season. Hot enough to swim, half the crowds, harvest in Irpinia. The single best month is mid-September.

Winter: only Naples and the islands stay alive. The Coast shrinks; many restaurants close. Great for city-only trips, museums, food.

Pastel houses tumbling down a cliff to a pebble beach — arguably the most photographed village on the Mediterranean, and the postcard Amalfi Coast image.

There's no single right answer. The right transfer depends on your luggage, your group size, when you arrive, and where on the coast you're staying.
