Limoncello — real, fake, and how to tell

Most yellow bottles on the coast are sugar and food colouring. The real thing is small-batch, slightly cloudy, and costs more.

Limoncello — real, fake, and how to tell

What to look for

The IGP Sfusato Amalfitano lemon (or the Sorrento Sfusato cousin) on the label means real fruit. A small batch from a Sorrento producer — I Giardini di Cataldo, Limonoro — runs €15–22 for a 500ml bottle.

Trust the cloudiness. Real limoncello is slightly opaque because it contains the lemon's natural oils. Crystal-clear is a red flag — it's been clarified.

Where to stay

Our homes in Sorrento

The classic balcony over the Bay of Naples — citrus groves, belle-époque hotels, and the easiest gateway to Capri, Pompeii, and the Amalfi Coast.
