Trains, buses, ferries — everywhere worth going is reachable. Skip the rental.
What the network covers
Trenitalia regional trains from Naples to Caserta (30 min), Salerno (50 min), Benevento (90 min), Avellino (90 min). Circumvesuviana for the eastern arc (Pompei, Sorrento, Herculaneum). SITA buses for Amalfi Coast inland points. Three ferry companies cover the islands and the coast.
The one stretch where a car helps: the inland Irpinia wine country (Taurasi, Tufo). Renting for the day from Naples is enough; you don't need it for a week.
