Circumvesuviana Closed Naples–Sorrento Again: Line Suspended 28–29 August 2026
EAV shuts the Barra–Torre del Greco stretch for a second round of tunnel works, three weeks after the first closure — replacement buses run via Villa Regina on both days.
What's closing, and why again?
EAV is suspending rail traffic on the Barra–Torre del Greco stretch for the entire service day on Friday 28 and Saturday 29 August 2026, to finish regulatory compliance works inside the same two tunnels — Bosco di Portici and Cavalli di Bronzo — closed for a first round on 7–8 August. This is a second, separate phase of the same job, not a new problem, and EAV has again given advance notice rather than closing without warning.
The closure hits the same two lines as before: Naples–Sorrento, the one most visitors use for day trips to Pompei, Ercolano and Sorrento, and Naples–Poggiomarino. Both cross the affected stretch to reach Naples, so both get cut short on these two days only, with normal service due back from Sunday 30 August.
How does the replacement service work?
Sorrento-line trains terminate at Torre Annunziata instead of reaching Naples; Poggiomarino-line trains terminate at Torre del Greco. Two replacement bus services cover the gap: an express bus via the highway, stopping at Napoli Porta Nolana, Napoli Garibaldi (Hotel Ramada stop), Torre Annunziata and Villa Regina; and a local-stops bus linking Porta Nolana and Garibaldi to Torre del Greco, calling near every station along the way.
Villa Regina, on the Sorrento line, is again the key interchange: it's where the bus service meets the still-running southern half of the line, so anyone heading to or from Sorrento, Pompei, or Ercolano on the 28th or 29th should plan for one change of transport rather than a direct ride.
What should travellers do on the 28th and 29th?
Build in extra time in both directions. Anyone staying in Sorrento with a fixed appointment in Naples on those two dates — an airport transfer, a museum slot, a dinner booking — should leave earlier than the usual Circumvesuviana journey would suggest, since the bus-plus-train combination through Villa Regina is slower and less predictable than the direct train. The same applies coming from Naples toward Sorrento or Pompei: catch the replacement bus from Porta Nolana or Garibaldi station with margin, rather than timing it to a train departure.
