The Circumvesuviana train from Naples — what to know
The local train to Pompei, Herculaneum and Sorrento is cheap, frequent, and slightly notorious. Use it well.
Rules of the road
Trains leave from Napoli Garibaldi (basement of Napoli Centrale). Tickets are cheap (€2–4) but only from machines or the ticket office — no contactless yet. Validate before boarding or face a €60 fine.
Sit by the doors. The trains are crowded at rush hour and pickpockets work the busiest stations. Keep your bag in front and your phone in a zipped pocket.
Avoid the Friday afternoon return from Sorrento — every weekend visitor heads back to Naples at once.
