Naples Airport Closure in November 2026: What Travelers Need to Know
Capodichino shuts down for roughly three weeks for runway resurfacing — here's the closure window, the backup airport, and what it means if you're flying into Naples this autumn.
When is Naples airport closing, and why?
Naples-Capodichino is set to close to all traffic for roughly three weeks in November 2026, indicatively from the 10th to the 30th, so that GESAC — the company that runs the airport — can resurface the runway. The current surface is being stripped down and rebuilt with materials meant to hold up better to wear and weather, a project worth around €20 million. The closure was originally pencilled in for earlier in the year but got pushed back to November after pressure from travel-trade groups worried about disrupting peak season.
This isn't a maybe: airlines are already rearranging their November schedules around it, which is the clearest sign the dates are close to final.
Where do flights go instead?
The main backup is Salerno Costa d'Amalfi airport in Pontecagnano Faiano, about 20km from Salerno — also GESAC-run, which makes it the logical landing spot for carriers shifting their Naples schedules. Iberia has already put its daily Madrid route on sale departing from Salerno instead of Naples for November 2026; expect other airlines serving Capodichino to follow with their own reroutes over the coming weeks. Some flights are also being pushed onto Rome's airports as a second option.
For anyone staying along the Amalfi Coast, Cilento, or in Salerno itself, this is arguably a wash or even an upgrade — Salerno's airport sits closer to those destinations than Capodichino does.
How should I plan a trip around the closure?
If you already hold a Naples flight for 10-30 November 2026, check directly with your airline rather than assuming it's cancelled — most are being re-pointed to Salerno or Rome, not scrapped outright. If you're still booking, search Salerno (airport code QSR) alongside Naples for that window; ground transport from Salerno into central Naples runs about an hour by car or bus, while it's noticeably closer if your stay is in Amalfi, Ravello, Positano, or the Cilento coast. Outside 10-30 November, Capodichino operates normally, so shoulder-season trips either side of the closure aren't affected.
