ENAV, the company that runs Italy's civil air traffic control, has a four-hour national strike scheduled for Wednesday 30 September 2026, from 1pm to 5pm. Staff at the Techno Sky ground-services company are striking in the same window, alongside separate, more localized ENAV strikes affecting Bologna and Bari airports and several ENAV facilities in Rome. Because it's an air traffic control strike rather than a single airline walking out, the disruption isn't limited to one carrier — any flight passing through Italian airspace during the strike window can be affected, at Capodichino and elsewhere.
The date sits inside a busier-than-usual September strike calendar covering trains, buses and flights across Italy — worth checking regardless of which airport you're flying through, but Naples travelers should mark 30 September specifically.
Which flights are actually protected?
Under the ruling from Italy's strike Guarantee Commission (Commissione di Garanzia), flights departing between 7am and 10am and between 6pm and 9pm are protected and must operate regardless of the strike. Anything scheduled between 10am and 1pm, or between 5pm and 6pm, sits close enough to the strike window that delays are common even outside the official 1pm–5pm stoppage — air traffic control disruptions tend to ripple across the whole day's schedule as the network catches up, not just the four hours themselves.
A flight booked squarely inside the 1pm–5pm window is the one most likely to be cancelled or significantly delayed. If you have a choice of departure time for that date, the early-morning or evening protected slots are the safer bet.
What should you do if you're flying through Naples that day?
Check your flight status directly with your airline 24–48 hours ahead — carriers usually confirm which individual flights are cancelled a day or two before an announced strike, once they've finalized their reduced schedule. Capodichino's own site (aeroportodinapoli.it) and ENAC's strike page carry the official protected-band ruling and any last-minute updates. If you're connecting through Naples to reach the coast — a ferry to Capri or Ischia, a train to Sorrento — build in extra buffer around midday on 30 September rather than a tight same-day connection.
