When does the eclipse happen in Naples?
On the evening of 12 August 2026, a partial solar eclipse crosses southern Italy as the sun sets — part of a wider eclipse whose path of totality runs over Greenland, Iceland, and northern Spain. Naples only sees the partial phase, and only right at the end of the day. The astronomy outlet INAF and multiple Italian sites (Il Fatto Quotidiano, napolike, techprincess) put the start just after 19:30, the peak in Naples around 20:00-20:20, and the moon's shadow covering an estimated 36-46% of the sun's disc — modest next to the near-95% coverage forecast for northern Italy, but visible.
Because the eclipse happens as the sun is already low and setting toward the west-northwest, the show ends with sunset itself rather than a dramatic mid-sky event — worth being in position by 19:30 rather than rushing out at the reported peak time.
Where to watch from Naples
The city's own seafront only works if you have a clear line to the west: Posillipo and the Molosiglio, near the port, both give an open view over the gulf. For a wider unobstructed horizon, locals point slightly out of the city — the lungomare at Torre del Greco or Castellammare di Stabia, both a short Circumvesuviana ride from Naples, put the sun setting directly over the Gulf of Naples with Capri and Ischia on the skyline.
Never look at the sun directly, even during a partial eclipse — certified eclipse glasses, not sunglasses, are essential for direct viewing, and a pinhole projection is the safe fallback if glasses aren't available. No ticket or booking is needed anywhere; it's a free, open-sky event, unlike the organised viewing evenings some observatories further north are running.
