Driving From Naples to Sorrento in 2026: SS145 Roadworks Paused Through Mid-September
Anas has stood down most roadworks on the SS145 Sorrentina until mid-September 2026, leaving a single alternating one-way stretch as the only real bottleneck between Naples and Sorrento.
What's changing on the SS145 Sorrentina this summer?
The SS145 Sorrentina is the state road that carries almost all car and taxi traffic between Naples — including airport transfers and connections from Castellammare di Stabia — and the Sorrento Peninsula, running through Vico Equense and Meta before reaching Sorrento itself. On 28 July 2026, Tullio Ferrante, undersecretary at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, convened Anas and the mayors of the peninsula's municipalities at Anas's Naples office to untangle a season's worth of overlapping construction sites on a road already straining under peak-season traffic.
The outcome: from 1 August through mid-September 2026, Anas is standing down most of the works in progress along the route, with the ministry adding roughly €1 million on top of an already-budgeted €4.6 million to fund the coordination. Anyone driving up from Naples or the airport this month should find a noticeably clearer run than earlier in the summer.
Which stretch is still restricted right now?
One bottleneck remains: an alternating one-way restriction (senso unico alternato) at km 36.3 on Via Nastro Azzurro, the corniche stretch of the SS145 near Vico Equense. Everything else is paused for the season — the road-bed consolidation at km 33.1 on Via Nastro Verde, technical maintenance inside the Privati and Varano tunnels, and structural reinforcement of the Varano tunnel ceiling. Work continues on the San Marco viaduct, but it's being managed without closing lanes to traffic. Build in a few extra minutes for the one alternating stretch, and the rest of the drive between Castellammare di Stabia and Sorrento should run close to normal.
What happens after mid-September?
The paused works resume once the summer crowds thin out, but on a schedule designed to stay out of the way: from mid-September, crews work only between 21:00 and 06:00, Monday to Thursday, so daytime traffic for commuters, families and anyone driving to a hotel check-in isn't affected. From October, a separate phase of resurfacing starts on the stretch between Pompei, Castellammare di Stabia, Gragnano and Vico Equense, and installing new expansion joints will close the Castellammare di Stabia exit from the SS145 for roughly a month — again, nights only. If a Sorrento trip falls in October, it's worth checking Anas's traffic bulletins before booking an early-morning or late-night transfer through that exit.
