Castel Sant'Elmo and Certosa di San Martino: New Naples Museum Hours for Summer 2026
Longer days, one shared closing day, and a fortress now open until 19:30.
What changed at the Vomero museums in July 2026?
From 1 July 2026, Naples' cluster of hilltop museums — the Certosa di San Martino, Castel Sant'Elmo, the Museo Duca di Martina in Villa Floridiana, and the Museo Novecento a Napoli housed inside Castel Sant'Elmo — extended their combined opening schedule by 27 hours a week, as first reported by Napoli da Vivere and confirmed across other local Naples outlets. The change also standardised the weekly closing day to Tuesday for the Certosa, the Duca di Martina, and the Novecento collection, replacing the previous staggered calendar that tripped up a lot of first-time visitors.
Castel Sant'Elmo itself — the star-shaped 14th-century fortress with the single best panoramic view of the bay — is now open every day of the week, Tuesdays included, from 8:30 to 19:30.
The new hours and prices, museum by museum
Certosa di San Martino: daily except Tuesday, 8:30–18:30, last entry 17:30, €6. Castel Sant'Elmo: daily, 8:30–19:30. Museo Novecento a Napoli, inside Castel Sant'Elmo at the Piazza d'Armi: closed Tuesdays, 9:30–18:30, last entry 17:30 — the combined Sant'Elmo-plus-Novecento ticket is €5 until 16:00, then a twilight rate of €2.50 from 16:00 to 19:30.
Museo Duca di Martina, inside Villa Floridiana: daily except Tuesday, 9:30–18:30, last entry 17:30, €4. The Floridiana park's gardens stay free to enter every day, until an hour before sunset — no ticket needed just to walk the grounds and catch the view.
Worth building into a Vomero afternoon
Reach the Vomero on the Funicolare Centrale from Via Toledo or the Funicolare di Chiaia, then walk ten minutes from Piazza Vanvitelli to Castel Sant'Elmo. The fortress's new 19:30 closing means a proper sunset visit is now possible without abandoning the terrace mid-golden-hour to make an earlier last entry — something the old hours didn't allow.
The €2.50 twilight ticket after 16:00 is a cheap way to fold the fort into an evening that already has a Vomero aperitivo on the plan, and the Tuesday closure now applying across three of the four sites makes it worth checking the calendar before making that day the one you head up the hill.
