Naples Marathon, 18 October 2026: Route, Road Closures, and What Changes Downtown
The Neapolis Marathon's sixth edition starts and finishes at Piazza del Plebiscito, with the seafront and parts of the historic centre closed to traffic from early morning.
What is the Neapolis Marathon, and where does it start?
The Neapolis Marathon, now in its sixth edition, runs on Sunday 18 October 2026: check-in and gathering from 07:00 at Piazza del Plebiscito, race start at 08:00, with a six-hour time limit. It's a FIDAL-certified 42.195 km course through Naples' historic centre and along the seafront promenade, Via Caracciolo, passing landmarks including Castel dell'Ovo and the Maschio Angioino — a route built to show off the bay rather than loop through industrial outskirts, which is part of why it draws international entrants alongside Italian club runners. A half-marathon runs alongside the full distance on the same morning.
Piazza del Plebiscito is both start and finish, so the square — normally open and easy to cross — becomes a staging and finish-line area for the whole morning, with barriers up well before the 08:00 start.
What changes for anyone in Naples that Sunday?
Traffic closes progressively along the route from the early morning, with the seafront and several streets in the centre shut to cars while the race is underway; with a six-hour limit, the last stretches don't reopen until early afternoon. Anyone with a fixed morning plan near the route — an airport transfer, a ferry from Molo Beverello, a checkout that involves a taxi through the centre — should build in extra time or route around Via Caracciolo and the Plebiscito area rather than through it.
On foot, it's the opposite problem: the closures make the seafront and historic centre calmer and largely car-free for the morning, which is arguably the best few hours all year to walk Via Caracciolo or cross Piazza del Plebiscito without traffic.
