Pompeii's New Bronze: The Canone di Policleto Statue Unveiled at the Archaeological Park
A scientific bronze reconstruction of the 5th-century-BC 'canonical' sculpture, cast from the historic molds of Naples' old Chiurazzi Foundry, joined the site's permanent exhibition path on 3 August 2026.
What is the Canone di Policleto, and why is it at Pompeii now?
Polykleitos was a 5th-century-BC Greek sculptor whose Doryphoros ('spear-bearer') became the ancient world's benchmark for ideal human proportion — the 'canon' later sculptors measured themselves against. On 3 August 2026, Pompeii's Archaeological Park unveiled a new bronze reconstruction built on that canon, cast using the historic plaster molds of Naples' former Chiurazzi Foundry — the same workshop whose casts also produced the Quadriga atop Rome's Altare della Patria.
Italy's Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli attended the unveiling. Rather than a temporary loan exhibition, the bronze has been integrated into the park's permanent visitor path, so it isn't going anywhere on a fixed end date the way most Pompeii special exhibitions do.
How do I see it, and is it worth the detour?
The statue is included in the standard Pompeii Archaeological Park admission — no add-on ticket, no separate reservation. It's a single, focused stop rather than a wing-spanning show, so it slots easily into a normal walk through the ruins without extending the visit by much.
