What is Aurea Maris in Conca dei Marini?
Conca dei Marini is one of the smallest, quietest villages on the Amalfi Coast, and this summer it has a stage of its own. Aurea Maris brings fourteen evenings of theatre, music, jazz and dance to the village's open-air Teatro Alfonso Gatto, with the performances set directly above the sea. The programme runs through 27 September 2026 — well past the August rush, into the weeks when the coast starts breathing again.
The mix is part of the appeal. This is not a single-genre festival: one night might be a play, the next a jazz set, the next dance. And fourteen dates spread across a long season means you do not have to build a trip around it — if you are on the coast between now and late September, there is a fair chance an evening lines up with your stay.
How does it compare to the Ravello festival?
Ravello's festival is the coast's famous one, and it draws crowds to match. Aurea Maris is the opposite proposition: smaller, calmer, and closer in spirit to a village evening than a major production. Live performance above the sea, without the scale and the crush of a big festival night.
It is best treated as a detour rather than a destination. Conca dei Marini sits just along the coast road from Amalfi, so if you are staying on this stretch of the coast, an evening at the theatre is an easy add-on, not an expedition — which is exactly how the locals seem to treat it.
How to plan an evening there
Check the official programme before you commit to a date: fourteen evenings across a long season means gaps between performances, and you will want to know what is actually on rather than turning up hopeful. Where booking is possible, book ahead — the theatre is open-air and village-sized, and seats on a warm night with the sea behind the stage do not go begging.
September may be the smart play. The programme runs to the 27th, the coast quietens after the Ferragosto peak, the evenings are still warm, and the coast road is noticeably easier. An open-air performance above the sea in mid-September, then a slow drive back to your stay: it is as good an argument for an off-peak Amalfi Coast trip as any.
