Bagnoli: from steelworks to America's Cup base — the west of Naples
The part of Naples most visitors never see is getting seven team bases and a marina for 2027 — and, on paper, a park — on ground that has been waiting since 1992.

The steelworks — and thirty years of waiting
Bagnoli is the flat strip of coast at the western end of Naples, beyond Posillipo, where the city runs out against the island of Nisida. Most visitors have never heard of it; the America's Cup 2027 team bases are why it is in this guide.
For most of the twentieth century this was a steelworks: ILVA inaugurated it on 19 June 1910, it became Italsider in 1964, and closed in 1992. Since then, a saga of more than thirty years: a clean-up still not finished, a bank of industrial fill in the sea, the colmata, only about a fifth being removed, and a long-standing swimming ban.
The Cup gave the project a deadline: seven team bases on about 37,000 m², a superyacht marina behind an extended breakwater and a free AC Tech FanZone with big screens. In late September 2026 the organisers reported three pairs of hangars built or nearly complete, with the seventh hangar and the cranes still to come; the mayor told Il Mattino that 60% of the dredging would be done within about 20 days, the rest later. The bases are due to be completed over winter 2026–27, with teams expected from January 2027.
Bagnoli in summer 2027 — dock-outs, screens, trains
The course sits off the Lungomare Caracciolo, about 10 km by land and roughly six nautical miles by sea; the AC75s are towed out; you will not see racing from here. You come for the dock-out before racing, the screens and the fan area planned behind the bases — simulators, team shops, bars; the yards in front stay closed to the public. Racing runs 22 May–19 July 2027, planned from 14:00.
Around the bases, this is the picture as of October 2026 — check before you go. Città della Scienza sits inside the works perimeter; check its site before a 2027 visit. The Pontile Nord, the public pier, is closed for works from 14 September 2026 until at least 14 February 2027. The free municipal lido reopened in July 2026, but swimming remains banned; the mayor and the commissioner's own structure now point to 2031 for a swimmable Bagnoli. Nisida is a juvenile prison and a Navy base, closed to visitors; the Gaiola marine reserve on the Posillipo side is free, with online booking compulsory May to September — check areamarinaprotettagaiola.it for current access.
Transport is still in flux: as of early October 2026 the Cumana from Montesanto (Agnano, Bagnoli and Dazio stops) is the only rail line reaching Bagnoli itself; Line 2 beyond Campi Flegrei remains suspended and the new Porta del Parco stop is a May 2027 target, not a promise — our getting-around guide has the detail; check eavsrl.it and Trenitalia the morning you travel.
The Campi Flegrei, plainly
Bagnoli sits on the eastern edge of the Campi Flegrei, a volcanic caldera. The ground rises and sinks over years, a phenomenon called bradyseism: uplift brings shallow earthquakes, strongly felt and usually small, then the ground slowly settles. The alert level, set by the Protezione Civile on INGV's assessments, has been yellow since 2012.
On 31 July 2026 a magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck beneath the Solfatara, the strongest since monitoring began in the 1970s. More than 20 were injured, and by 5 October 2026 about 6,000 people in Pozzuoli were out of their homes, according to Pozzuolinews24. According to INGV-OV's weekly bulletin of 6 October 2026 the ground has been rising around 10 mm a month since February 2026, and the alert remains yellow.
We will not give you a safety verdict. What there is: the Protezione Civile's rules of conduct — know which zone you are in, avoid basements and low enclosed spaces where carbon dioxide can collect, respect the bans at the Solfatara and Pisciarelli, and follow IT-alert messages. Before booking out here, read the latest INGV-OV bulletin and the Naples and Pozzuoli Comune pages.
Pozzuoli and the Flegrean sights — the bonus
Pozzuoli, a working port with a new Cumana station opened on 11 September 2026, is the reason to go west. As of October 2026 the Rione Terra above the port is closed, since 31 July; the Solfatara crater has been shut since the 12 September 2017 tragedy, with no reopening date; the Anfiteatro Flavio closes on Tuesdays; check pafleg.cultura.gov.it. You see the Macellum, the so-called Temple of Serapis, from the street, its pitted columns the textbook picture of bradyseism.
Round the bay, the Castello di Baia houses the Campi Flegrei archaeological museum; in 2026 it closed on Mondays and Cuma on Wednesdays — check pafleg.cultura.gov.it before you go, as hours can change after the quake. The sunken Roman town is seen by glass-bottomed boat, at the operator's prices. Procida is 25–45 minutes away by boat from the port below the station — times, fares and the race-day detour are in our islands guide.
Staying out west — and what remains after
This side of the city suits people working the event, dock-out regulars on race days, and anyone priced out of Chiaia. Fuorigrotta is ordinary and residential, on Line 6 and the Cumana; Bagnoli is quieter and, according to estate agents quoted by Il Mattino, cheaper and attracting investors; requests to open new B&Bs rose about 30% in 2025, according to the trade body Aigo Confesercenti — requests, not bookings.
The trade-offs are real: no racing to see, rail to the west that has failed twice in a year, and in Pozzuoli, after the July quake, many buildings declared unsafe, hotels that housed displaced families in August, and reported cancellations. Choose Pozzuoli with your eyes open.
And after 19 July 2027? What is promised — plans, not certainties: according to the mayor, who is also the site's government commissioner, the team structures are temporary, and what stays is a large seaside park with free beach access, bathing platforms on the colmata, a restored Lido Pola and the Line 2 station. The marina is the open question: it is on the official 2027 berthing list, and what remains after the Cup is unresolved as of October 2026. We at Vesuview are Neapolitans, and would love to tell you the work is finished; it is not, and summer 2027 is when visitors first come to look.
