The 18th Capri Photography Festival opens 30 August in the cloister of the Certosa di San Giacomo, with a new Paolo Ventura series built around the Blue Grotto.
What is the Capri Photography Festival, and when is the 2026 edition?
Viaggi e Miraggi is Capri's annual photography festival, now in its 18th edition, running from 30 August to 11 October 2026 in the small cloister of the Certosa di San Giacomo — the fourteenth-century Carthusian monastery near the Giardini di Augusto, one of the island's quietest and most striking exhibition spaces. The opening reception is set for the evening of 29 August. This year's programme is curated by Denis Curti and centres on a new, previously unseen project by Italian photographer Paolo Ventura, built around the bicentennial of the Blue Grotto's rediscovery.
What's on show, and is it the same as the Blue Grotto exhibition?
It isn't the same show, even though both landed at the Certosa this year and both mark the Blue Grotto's 200th anniversary. Il Mito di Capri, the historical exhibition already running there through 18 October, traces the grotto's rediscovery and its role in turning Capri into a European destination. Viaggi e Miraggi is a separate, purely photographic festival: its centrepiece is six large-format works by Paolo Ventura, who builds his images from handcrafted miniature sets — paper, cardboard, small painted figures — rather than shooting the grotto directly, turning it into something closer to a staged fable than a documentary record. Alongside Ventura, the festival shows the winning project from a Capri Foundation open call launched in March 2026, by conceptual photographer Mari Saxon, on view through October.
How to see both, and plan the visit
Since both shows share the same venue and overlap almost entirely on dates, they're easy to see back to back on one visit to the Certosa di San Giacomo, a five-minute walk from the Piazzetta along Via Vittorio Emanuele. Early morning or the couple of hours before sunset avoid the day-tripper crush around the Piazzetta and gardens next door, and the cloister itself stays cool and shaded even in September's remaining heat.
