Posillipo: the hill above the America's Cup 2027 course in Naples
Belvederes instead of the seafront crush, binoculars instead of a sea-wall seat, and a funicular that is currently a bus. The hill, explained by people who climb it.

The ridge โ Mergellina to Capo Posillipo
Posillipo is the hill above the America's Cup 2027 course in Naples: a ridge roughly 150 metres high running from Mergellina, at the western end of the Lungomare, out to Capo Posillipo. The race box lies off the Lungomare Caracciolo, between Castel dell'Ovo and this headland, so the hill is its western bookend โ and the reason Procida, Ischia and Pozzuoli cannot see the racing.
Four streets recur in listings. Via Posillipo starts at Palazzo Donn'Anna, just west of Mergellina harbour, and follows the lower slope towards the cape; Via Petrarca has a belvedere higher up, with Via Orazio below it; Via Manzoni runs along the top. In between are villas, palazzi and gated blocks with gardens โ in our experience, far fewer flats come up for rent than in Chiaia.
Two addresses to admire from outside. Palazzo Donn'Anna, Fanzago's unfinished 1640s palace, is mostly private homes and part ruin, closed to visitors. Villa Rosebery, the Italian President's residence since 1957, opens only on a handful of announced days โ in 2026 a June weekend via the Quirinale platform (โฌ2.50 fee) and 10โ11 October for FAI members, booked out within days โ so watch quirinale.it and fondoambiente.it.
The belvederes โ height is tactics, distance is binoculars
Luciano Cosentino, a veteran Naples race officer, has described the course as about a nautical mile off Castel dell'Ovo; from this height you get the whole race box at a glance โ start, crosses, marks โ but fingernail-sized boats, so bring binoculars. In September 2026 Cronache della Campania, citing councillor Armato's office, named Via Orazio and the Terrazza di Sant'Antonio among the most crowded spots.
All are public. The Terrazza di Sant'Antonio, beside the church above Mergellina, is free and open daily at the top of the Rampe di Sant'Antonio, the tredici discese from Piazza Sannazaro โ steep and shadeless, so go early or take bus C31 along Via Manzoni; the funicular's Sant'Antonio stop, still listed in older guides, is no use while the line is closed. Via Petrarca and Via Orazio are roadside belvederes on residential streets โ in our experience with little seating and no shade.
Parco Virgiliano, at the cape, draws the most questions. Only part of it has been open since 27 June 2026; as of October 2026 the Comune says the works finish in the course of 2027, and opening hours run roughly from 7:00 until evening โ check before you go. Its belvederes face Nisida and the open sea, so you see the race area obliquely, far off: come for the sunset, not the start gun.
Marechiaro, the Gaiola and the lidos
Marechiaro is the fishing borgo at the foot of the cape, the one in Di Giacomo's song; the restaurant 'A Fenestella, Via Marechiaro 23, closes on Tuesdays โ confirm by phone. In 2026 Via Marechiaro and Via Russo were a summer ZTL from 16 May to 27 September, taxis allowed.
The Gaiola, the islets and marine reserve at the tip of the cape below Parco Virgiliano, is free all year, but from May to September online booking is mandatory, in two slots, 9:00โ13:00 and 14:00โ18:00, with a free electric shuttle. After the 31 July 2026 Campi Flegrei earthquake the port authority banned access to the shore beneath the cliffs here until further notice; we have not verified it still stands โ check the Comune di Napoli notices and areamarinaprotettagaiola.it before going down.
Two lidos sit on this stretch. Lido Marechiaro, Calata Ponticello a Marechiaro 33, takes bookings by phone โ check before you go; the last prices we can cite are Il Mattino's 2025 figures: โฌ18 entry and lounger, โฌ6 umbrella. Bagno Elena, Via Posillipo 14, lies under Palazzo Donn'Anna; after the 2025 court rulings part of its beach became free and a June 2026 review reported no sunbeds, so ring first. Free stretches have no guaranteed lifeguard.
Up and down โ buses, ramps, a closed funicular
The Mergellina funicular, 147 metres of climb up to Via Manzoni, would be the natural way up โ as of early October 2026 it is closed, replaced by bus 621, with no official reason or reopening date. Fanpage reported in March 2026 a 20-year overhaul with reopening pencilled for early 2027, but that is unconfirmed as the cause; check anm.it.
Two bus routes matter here. The 140 is the only one along Via Posillipo, running down to the seafront and along Via Caracciolo to Via Santa Lucia roughly every 15โ20 minutes: it links hill and course but shares the seafront road, and the Comune has not approved a 2027 traffic plan. The C31 runs along Via Manzoni to the Vomero; its frequency is disputed, so check anm.it for both.
On foot, the Rampe di Sant'Antonio take us a sweaty quarter of an hour from Piazza Sannazaro to the terrace; from Mergellina the seafront to the Rotonda Diaz is a flat 20 minutes or so; taxis home at night. A car is a mixed blessing: Garage Manzoni, Via Manzoni 120/A, is covered and guarded, but with summer ZTLs, one bus route and no 2027 parking plan, keep it for day trips.
Staying in Posillipo โ who it suits
Scarcity is the first fact. Estate agents quoted by Il Mattino in May 2026 said course-view homes on Via Orazio, Via Partenope and Mergellina were often already rented, with sea-view flats on Via Partenope and Via Manzoni asking around โฌ2,500 a week in peak weeks. Agent estimates, not market data; hoteliers say 2027 rates are not set.
Who it suits: couples; people staying weeks, not days (racing runs 22 Mayโ19 July 2027, planned from 14:00, with gaps between stages according to the planned calendar published in 2026, which includes reserve days and may change); anyone trading proximity for a terrace with the whole bay in view. Who it does not: anyone pushing a pushchair up the ramps, anyone who wants the Race Village ten minutes from the door, anyone who resents waiting for a 140.
Our honest Vesuview answer: if you find a Posillipo terrace facing the course for your week, take it and plan around the bus; if not, stay in Chiaia or Mergellina and climb the hill on race afternoons, as Neapolitans did in September 2026. Either way, check americascup.com and the Comune di Napoli for 2027 viewing arrangements before buying binoculars.
